Pontefract Racecourse is a hugely popular course in Yorkshire and attracts big crowds to the 16 race days each year, from April through to October. There has been racing recorded on the current location since as early as 1790, with three day meetings being recorded in 1801. The first grandstand was constructed in 1802 with an additional stand erected in 1879. A further new grandstand was built just after the First World War in 1922.

During the Second World War Pontefract and Stockton Racecourse on Teesside were the only two courses in the North of England to host horseracing. As a result the Ebor Meeting from York was actually hosted at Pontefract in 1943 and run over 1m 4f it was won by Yorkshire Hussar. Similar to York Racecourse the track was changed from a horse shoe shape to the complete oval we see today in 1983. The change allowed for races over two miles to be held. The latest refurbishments to the course were the expansion of the paddock area and opening of the Dalby Stand in 1995 followed by the refurbishment of the Silver Stand in 1999.
